Sex and Its Relationship to Stress

There are many studies that show that couples who have an active sex life have far less stress than those who do not.  However, lets examine this a little closer.  The question I have is does the sexual intimacy help just keep stress away from the beginning or does the sexual intimacy actually work on the stress to lessen it.  I have seen studies both ways.  For me, I feel that it actually does both.  I think that sexual intimacy allows you to avoid stress by keeping you relaxed and better able to handle situations as they arise.  However, I also believe that the chemicals released during sexual intimacy can have a dramatic effect on the stress level in people.  So, I really don't think it matters which way you look at it.

I also came across this interesting study and wanted to share it with you. - Rob

This information comes from Jennifer Bass, the head of information services at the Kinsey Institute for Research in Sex, Gender and Reproduction in Bloomington, IN.

A recent study of college students at the State University of New York in Albany suggests that semen acts as an antidepressant. Females in the study who were having sex without condoms (see safe sex caution, above) had fewer signs of depression than women who used condoms or abstained from sex.

“These data are consistent with the possibility that semen may antagonize depressive symptoms,” the authors wrote, “and evidence which shows that the vagina absorbs a number of components of semen that can be detected in the bloodstream within a few hours of administration.”
I kid you not, ladies. Semen is good stuff. It gives a shot of zinc, calcium, potassium, fructose, proteins -- a veritable cornucopia of vitality!

Cereal and Relationships? What????

I saw this photo and instantly thought of the blended spirit.  Mmmm...yes, it is coming through in a much different way today.  If you aren't sure what I mean by blended spirit then listen to our podcast where we talked about this click here.

So what drew me to this concept when looking at a picture of fruit loop-like cereal?  Well, clearly there is a blend of different colors and proposed flavors or tastes.  If you were to sort through the box and separate each color into individual bowls, you would have numerous bowls - but they would have little variety.  When you combine them into one bowl you get a mixture of flavor and color.  This mixture can enhance the overall flavor and creates a more interesting appearance.

In our lives, we are each a mixture of different "fruit loops".  We all have an infinite amount of past experiences, old wounds, successes, failures, past and present friendships and love relationships.  We bring so much to the table that it is truly mind boggling.  This is why each and every one of us is truly unique.  No two people have had the exact same experiences nor have they perceived their experiences the same.  When we bring these aspects of ourselves into any relationship - be it romantic, family-oriented, work-related or with a stranger - we bump up against their experiences - the various aspects of them.  Then those different pieces blend together (even if only briefly).  This creates a blended energy or a blended spirit.

The above picture drew me today and I felt compelled to offer you a different way to grasp the concept of the blended spirit.  I am not sure I will look at fruit loop cereal the same way again....will you?

Spiritually Turned On

Nothing gets my blood pumping faster than good conversation.  However, the deep metaphysical and spiritual conversations I have with my partner are far and away my favorites.  We can spend hours upon hours talking on fascinating subjects.  This is a real turn on for me.  Yes it turns me on physically - my blood is pumping and my partner even looks more beautiful in my eyes when we open these doors of perception.  It also turns me on mentally and allows my mind to open up and unfold like the lotus yearning for the sun.  I turn into a sponge and want to absorb my partner both physically and mentally.  Maybe that sounds a little strange to you, but it makes perfect sense to me.   Ultimately, this connects us spiritually too!

Valentine's Day is Coming

Okay, if you haven't realized yet, Valentine's Day is just around the corner.  If you haven't planned out a way to show your beloved how much you care for them, you better get to cracking.

Now, don't think you have to go out and break the bank for this holiday.  This is one that you can actually make very special with little or no money.  Think of free things you can give your partner.  Things like a massage, making a special meal, or writing a poem are wonderful heartfelt ways to show your love.

I think one thing that is really special if you can swing it is to decorate your house or room for Valentine's Day.  Get some streamers and balloons and go crazy decorating while your lover is gone.  When he/she returns home they will be amazed.  Presents are great, but they never seem to last as long as memories do so keep that in mind as you are planning this year.

**Note from Janelle - I just wanted to add to Rob's post today.  I remember when we were dating and I came home from my studio, opened my garage door only to discover tons of red and pink balloons and streamers hanging from it.  When the door went up the streamers and balloons did too and were above my head when I got out of the car.  It was so sweet :) That was 2001...yet, the memory has stayed all these years.
