Syrup Sandwiches

Choose Not to Give Up!

Syrup Sandwiches is a powerful story about a young black boy who defeats the odds. Anthony Owens shares how he became a successful black man as he had to rise above the expected outcome for a child raised in poverty. Even though he was subjected to neglectful, abusive men, he understood the importance of breaking this cycle to become the caring and responsible father he never had. Anthony Owens is one of the underrepresented voices in America - A black man raised by a single mother struggling to make ends meet; he speaks for voices that so often go unheard. Faced with the odds of poverty, an absentee father, trauma, violence and gang brutality, Anthony gives us a raw look at how he was determined not to be defined by his circumstances and make a way out of no way. Syrup Sandwiches is an inspiring story that gives hope to all children, especially poor children of color, providing a message of hope and success. In a time when society is looking at stories that speak to the black American experience, this is a story that is unapologetically authentic.

Anthony Owens felt compelled to write this memoir because far too many children are facing issues such as poverty, bullying, domestic abuse, single parenting, fatherlessness and a myriad of other issues that he endured. Syrup Sandwiches reveals Anthony’s plight as it uncovers how he was able to choose success. This memory provides hope for those facing similar issues. Anthony believes he is the best person to write this memoir because he has lived through hell, and when giving up was his only option, he chose to look up, tuning out all the naysayers, and charting his way forward. His goal for Syrup Sandwiches is for readers to see that even when life is unpredictable and challenging, giving up is not an option. Entertaining and inspiring Syrup Sandwiches is a must read for everyone.

Loved Just As I Am

Loved Just As I Am

We don't get to pick the traumatic events that happen in our lives, but we do get to choose how we let them write our stories. In her debut release, Loved Just As I Am, Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor, Melissa McDaniel, recounts how her idyllic life in the south was changed forever when she was sexually assaulted at age eleven.

In Loved Just As I Am, McDaniel purposefully and painfully examines her past traumas and shares her realization of how she used denial or avoidance as a means of emotional protection until well into her thirties. She shares her raw journey of not only processing her childhood wounds but her struggles as a young woman dealing with a violent ex-boyfriend, racism within her family and community, motherhood, addiction, and infidelity.

Using her deep faith, love of family, and firm belief that we are all enough, McDaniel skillfully owns her "crapola" while laying bare her feelings and actions, both good and bad. Her fresh perspective and vulnerability create a roadmap of healing for others like her to rise above pain, shame, and doubt. The result is a life guided by wisdom, freedom, and healing.

As a therapist in the mental health field, she has worked with clients of all ages who are struggling with everything from addiction to sexual abuse. Using her steadfast belief in God and the ability to evaluate and celebrate the paradoxes of life experiences, good and bad, she hopes to help others heal rather than remain in the vicious cycle of shame and doubt.

"I believe we must choose to see the light and have hope, even when it is as small as a mustard seed," McDaniel shared. "When people are in deep emotional pain, they will do anything to stop that pain even when the choices add even more layers of shame. Unresolved traumas allow our emotions to rule our life. These unconfronted traumas keep us all confined to a smaller version of ourselves. It's only when we get tired of hurting ourselves and others and begin to be proactive about finding the root of our distress that the darkness recedes. Refuse to live in despair. Instead, seek love, understanding, and forgiveness."

Loved Just As I Am, shares her thirty-year journey of learning from her own pain and shame, choosing to let go of judgment and control, and never losing sight of the knowledge that God loved her unconditionally. McDaniel now uses her complete understanding of compassion to help alleviate the suffering of another.
